I really really enjoyed the liberal alternative atmosphere of Amsterdam. The coffeeshops are a big part of it; you smell them minutes before you see them. There are shops that sell magic mushrooms, you get hash lollies in news agencies or can stop somewhere for a special cookie or brownie and you can buy cannabis seeds on the market. LEGALLY! It’s incredible.
I’m not quite sure what to think of Amsterdam’s coffeeshops. On the one hand I really wanted to visit one on my trip since it’s like THE thing to do in Amsterdam, but I ended up not doing it. I don’t know, I just think it’s weird to go to a “café” sitting around a table with a bunch of others getting high. If you’re at a house party with people dancing, playing drinking games and stuff – fine! But in a public place? With all those strangers around and tourists staring inside? No thank you…
I had a great conversation about Amsterdam with a friend not too long ago and we came up with the idea that we should get a bunch of people together and hit the city for a party weekend or so, which would be epic. There’s no doubt. I’m going to end up going to a coffeeshop one day anyway, because there are just some things in life you have to have done 😀
